In 2023, I undertook a documentary photo project focusing the refugee camp Borgo Mezzanone near the South Italian village of the same name. Situated on the fringes of Foggia, the camp is a stark symbol of Europe’s ongoing humanitarian challenges. Originally an abandoned airfield raised during the times of Mussolini, Borgo Mezzanone has grown into a sprawling settlement where thousands of people—many of them undocumented agricultural workers—live in precarious and often inhumane conditions.

The project was supported by the Volkshochschule (VHS), Germany’s network of public educational institutions, and culminated in a public exhibition. My goal was not only to document the harsh realities of life in the camp but also to create space for reflection, dialogue, and visibility—something the residents of Borgo Mezzanone are so often denied.

Through these images, I aim to confront viewers with the contradiction between the ideals of human dignity and the lived experience of those on the margins of Europe. The project bears witness to the resilience of the people who live there, as well as to the systemic neglect that sustains such conditions.
